Title : The outsourcing of specialised hair treatment for paediatric burn patients attending Children’s Health Ireland (CHI)
Description : Hair restoration for paediatric burn victims is a highly specialised procedure that requires expert knowledge and skills. It is CHI’s understanding that HRBR are the only facility on the island of Ireland offering the necessary qualifications or experience in managing complex paediatric burn cases. Ensuring quality treatment is of CHI’s highest priority. It is not deemed feasible, largely due to cost, urgency and the complexity of cases, to outsource this care to a provider outside of Ireland. Furthermore, CHI recognise that paediatric patients recovering from burns require consistent and coordinated care with a single provider close to home. Paediatric burn victims require individualised treatment plans. Direct contracting with an experienced provider allows for a more personalised and holistic approach to care. The provider of these services is expected to be an important part of a paediatric burn victim's recovery, both physically and emotionally. Selecting a specialist who is experienced in working with children and understands the psychosocial impact of hair loss can lead to better medical and emotional outcomes. HRBR is the only Joint Commission International (JCI)-approved hair transplant facility in Ireland. JCI is the world’s leader in health care accreditation and works rigorously to improve patient safety and the quality of health care in the international community. JCI accreditation is considered the gold standard in global health care. CHI have concluded that there is not a sound clinical, legal, financial or administrative reason that warrants a competitive tender process, nor is there a viable alternative or substitute that can meet the requirements of this unique cohort of CHI patients requiring such specialised treatment.
