2.1 Procedure

Title : Microscope with Atomic Force Microscopy
Description : The acquisition is a modular Confocal Raman Microscopy (CRM) system integrated with atomic force microscopy (AFM), customised for in situ characterisation of materials under controlled environmental conditions, including temperature, relative humidity, and CO₂ concentration, as well as under-water exposures. The system is supposed to enable high-resolution spectroscopic and topographical measurements, allowing correlation of chemical composition with nanoscale structural features. The equipment should be compatible with incorporating multiple excitation sources (in particular 532 nm and 785 nm) and dual spectrometer configurations to cover a broad spectral range and accommodate diverse application needs. The modular design is essential, ensuring that the system can be upgraded over time with additional excitation sources, spectrometers, accessories, or experimental modules to meet evolving research requirements. The equipment should offer automatic hardware control and pre-configure measurement routines. Automation and an intuitive graphical user interface should be as a part of the overall system to allow programming and execution of complex scripts to extend in situ experiments with minimal operator intervention. The environmental control capabilities should support stable and long-duration studies of material behaviour under precisely regulated conditions. The system should include a user-friendly software interface for spectral post-processing, Raman and AFM mapping, and advanced data analysis, enabling comprehensive interpretation of multi-modal datasets. The acquisition should address DTU’s need for advanced, adaptable instrumentation to support interdisciplinary research in material science, energy applications, and sustainable construction technologies.

Value of all contracts awarded in this notice : 380 000 Euro
Direct award :
Justification for direct award : The contract can be provided only by a particular economic operator because of an absence of competition for technical reasons
Other justification : The combination of features required for DTU’s research is uniquely provided by the WITec alpha300 apyron, which is the top of the line in WITec’s series Raman imaging microscope. It is an automated 3D Confocal Raman Microscope that is integrated with an Atomic Force Microscope, enabling acquisition of Raman-related chemistry map with detailed topographical features through WITec True Raman surface technology and AFM system. The system is modular and easy to upgrade when more laser excitation sources, spectrometers, stages or accessories are required. The system has been customised to adopt larger samples 50x50mm, which is an excellent working area for construction material characterisation. The system has been coupled with a Top Stage Incubator with CO2 and Humidity Control, and the potential to inject water. The system is equipped with water dipping objectives enabling underwater characterisation. Also, it cover multiple short and long distance objectives (10x,50x,100x), providing opportunities for high resolution imaging and flexibility for specific applications like monitoring heat-generating reactions. Additionally, we require high spatial resolution, better than 350 nm, when using a 532 nm laser, as well as the capability for depth profiling with a resolution better than 900 nm using the same laser. The user interface is a software, WITec Project SEVEN PLUS, offering advanced Raman imaging and SPM data evaluation, with unique functionalities included: ⦁ Additional Features for TrueComponent Analysis: ⦁ Automatic determination of Components based in residual analysis ⦁ Simply add components into your analysis by double clicking any image pixel ⦁ Real-time image refresh for visualization of refined results ⦁ Intuitive Demixing of components by weighted subtraction algorithms ⦁ Multivariate Dataanalysis: Cluster analysis, Principal component analysis (PCA) & Non negative matrix factorization (NMF) ⦁ Advanced fitting tool: Fitting of full 2D/3D datasets ⦁ Data cropping and reduction ⦁ Image correlation & Overlay ⦁ Graph and image repair ⦁ Various filters e.g. Fourier, Anisotropic, Edge, Sharpen, User-Customized. The MSX3201-7010 1 piece WITec Control SEVEN, software license Instrument and experiment control software package with multi-purpose WITec EasyLink Human Interface Device. Functionality (dependent on configuration): · EasyLink Advanced Video Control: Video Autofocus, Auto-Brightness, stepless LED Brightness slider controls · EasyLink Movement and Focus Control: Move around the sample precisely using independent analogue control sticks · All measurement modes accessible in one comprehensive software package · Measurements with all installed techniques (e.g. AFM, Raman) can be applied, controlled simultaneously and are easily correlated · All essential parameters are automatically set when changing between measurement modes · TrueScanTM for exact piezo positioning control even at the fastest scan rates (requires Piezo-Scanner) · Capability of measuring very large data sets, for e.g. image stacks · Automated multispot measurement sequences with the ability to execute complex scripts at every point · Multi-user management including user customizable software configurations for individual measurement pre-configurations While other Raman technology providers also offer high-quality Raman systems, none found capable of providing the required combination of features in a single, modular, upgradeable platform with large-sample handling and the specific environmental capabilities essential for the multidisciplinary projects at DTU Construct. Most alternative solutions were fixed configurations, limiting adaptability for evolving research needs and requiring significant reinvestment for future expansions. The selected system uniquely meets all criteria in a single integrated setup. It combines confocal Raman and AFM in a modular architecture with advanced automation and environmental control, enabling precise correlation between chemical and topographical data for large and heterogeneous material samples. Its compatibility with a wide range of third-party stages and accessories further ensures long-term adaptability. This configuration has been successfully deployed in leading research laboratories for similar applications demonstrating reliability and performance in demanding material science contexts. Based on technical capabilities, upgrade potential, and cost-effectiveness, no alternative supplier could match the full set of required specifications.
