Title : SPECTRA ETEM - Service agreement for one-of-its-kind dynamic environmental aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy
Description : Center for Visualizing Catalytic Processes (VISION), funded by DNRF (Danish National Research Foundation) and Technical University of Denmark (DTU), wants to enter into a Service Agreement for its one-of-its-kind dynamic environmental aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope (MICROSCOPE) which was purchased from Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2020. The MICROSCOPE is located at DTU and paid jointly by DNRF and DTU. The MICROSCOPE is key for VISION in reaching its ambitious research goal of relating the atomic structure, dynamics and function of single nanoparticles during catalysis and combines for the first time (1) quantitative electron microscopy (EM) for retrieving the 3D atomic structure of nano-scale objects, enabled by a new aberration-corrector for the objective lens in TEM mode achieving 50 pm resolution, (2) time-resolution spanning milli- to tens of seconds to follow progression of catalysis, using high-sensitive charged-coupled and directed electron detection cameras, (4) in situ EM of nanostructure during exposure to reactive gas environments, enabled by a new open gas cell architecture in a true-power objective lens, (5) spatiotemporal-resolved spectroscopy of nanostructures and catalysis and (6) detection sensitivity to suppress of beam-induced sample alterations, using Nelssionian illumination.

6. Results

Value of all contracts awarded in this notice : 1 431 784,3 Danish krone
Direct award :
Justification for direct award : The contract can be provided only by a particular economic operator because of an absence of competition for technical reasons
Other justification : The only provider who is capable of servicing the one-of-its-kind dynamic environmental aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope (MICROSCOPE) is the original supplier of the MICROSCOPE. This is due to the technical and proprietary knowledge of the original supplier of the MICROSCOPE. It is impossible for another tenderer to ensure the required maintenance and service and it is necessary to use specific knowledge, tools or means only available to the original supplier of the MICROSCOPE. In addition, it requires specific knowledge and experience to ensure functionality. Finally, the MICROSOPE is protected by exclusive rights, which means that only the original supplier of the MICROSCOPE can be awarded the contract. The only reason why the service contract was not awarded at the same time as the purchase of the MICROSCOPE was that the financing was not in place at the time. The financing is in place now.
